Happy National Wine Day!

May 25th is National Wine Day (although, isn’t National Wine Day an everyday occurrence?!). I am kicking off Memorial Day weekend with a list of interesting wine facts to brighten up your conversations.

You’re welcome!

1-      Wine production may have started in Armenia in 4100 BC where the first wine press and fermentation vats were found.

2-      The God Dionysus of Ancient Greece was the god of grape harvest and winemaking.

3-      There is evidence of winemaking in Ancient Egypt in 3000 BC.

4-      The Roman Empire developed viticulture and oenology techniques back in the first century BC.

5-      In the Middle Ages, Monks produced wine in France and Germany to be consumed during mass.

6-      Countries without a traditional wine history are considered as New World: Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the U.S.A. to name a few.

7-      France, Italy and Spain are the three largest wine producing countries.

8-      Champagne can only be made in the Champagne region of France and be labelled as such.

9-      Terroir which refers to the soil type, climate and sun exposure, is essential to a vineyard. Each wine is unique because of its terroir.

10-   Hold your wine glass by the stem. It will keep your glass free of smudges and your wine at the correct temperature.

Have a great weekend!
